Mirrors are a significant portion of our lives. Had it not been for them, we could never see our imperfections or abilities in starkness. Even in photos, the effect is magical.
Imagine a landscape that is mirrored. It gives an uncanny magical effect. A mirror effect is the weakest link or the strongest factor to spruce up images. We show you how. “It’s all done with mirrors” goes a professional saying. These days digital photography artists are turning virtual magicians with numerous innovative tools at their disposal. The mirror picture effect is one such tool.
Elaborated here is a procedure to use the mirror picture effect to customize images.
The mirror picture effect is nothing but duplicating one part of the image on the other side, whether it is top to bottom or left to right. There are theoretical steps followed by professionals to create the magical mirror picture effect.
Step 1:
Start with a picture, or perhaps a vision of your final mirror image. It is always said that when you set out to accomplish something you should always have your final goal in sight. In addition, in this field, it is always good to work on copies of images and not disturb the original image or picture.
Step 2:
Increasing the canvas size. Canvas here indicates the actual working area. In Photoshop, we can increase the actual canvas size. When we first open Canvas size, the central box in the tic-tac-toe grid becomes shaded.
Step 3:
Move the shaded box into any of the other boxes, followed by typing in a new text height and/or with dimensions. Increase the canvas size at the bottom of the picture; then move the shaded area to the top middle box. Type in the canvas size.It is more than double the size of the original photograph. After doubling the working area, one can get enough working space to suitably modify.
Step 4:
Creation of a flipped copy of the original image is very easy. This is done by using the Marquee tool. By selecting the original image area, go to edit>copy and then go to file menu> new which creates the new document, which is the exact size as the original image. Next we go to edit>paste the image into a new document on a new layer. In order to flip the middle, go to edit> transform>flip vertically. This will flip the image.
Step 5:
In order to create the magical mirror picture effect, use the Move Tool and drag the flipped image into a blank area of the original image. Now both the images are lined up carefully so that they look perfectly mirrored. Next, we flatten the image by going to menu Layers>Flatten.
Step 6:
An optional fun thing we can do is to create the effect of the original image being reflected in water. This is done by selecting the mirrored portion of the image, using the Marquee Tool, accessing menu Filters>Distort>Ocean Ripple. Here one can play around with ripple size and ripple magnitude until one is happy with the effect. Then click on ok. Now go to menu Select>Deselect in order to deselect the area on which you have applied the ocean ripple filter. Finally, one can use the crop tool to firm the picture to one’s liking.
